Beware “Bad Advice”

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, (Psalm 1:1).

I’ve never been to Burning Man. I’m not sure that with the resources and constitution I possess that I could survive. But it fascinates me. This morning I was looking through a series of photos shot at this year’s event and ran across the one attached to these comments.

“Bad Advice”. It sounds like a great name for a rock band. And I love the fact that someone at Burning Man identifies that much of what they might have to offer would not be very helpful. Unfortunately, in this life, we don’t often get this warning. That must be why the writer of the first Psalm opens the book with the warning to be careful not to follow the “counsel of the wicked”.

Let’s assume for the moment, that the “wicked” here refers to those who have no clue about Truth, with a capital “T”. I am not suggesting that anyone who is not a believer does not have some good advice. If you need brain surgery, get a great neurosurgeon. You don’t need to know their worldview. But if you are looking for guidance about how to live your life, especially as God planned, then beware… “Bad Advice” is everywhere.

The psalmist will go on to give some “Good Advice”. Do you want a blessed life? His recommendation is to “delight in the Law of the Lord”. Check out the “owner’s manual” for good advice, and check with men and women who are committed to Christ to make sure your understanding of the Word is accurate.

This Sunday I’m beginning a short series at Highline on the Psalms. You can link to it from bobbeltz.com, or go directly to the below link to follow along. We also live stream at 10:30 a.m. if you want to join us live.

Just an FYI, for those of you who have been following these posts on Examiner.com, I will not be posting there anymore (their decision, not mine). The easiest way to keep getting them is to go to bobbeltz.com and subscribe. You can also access the Sunday morning videos from there.
